hobart, tasmania

Heading to Hobart, Tasmania with kiddos? WanderMom Cally loved having a "taste of New Zealand" in Australia in this scenic and foodie city (and surrounding areas). Here is her guide to kid-friendly Hobart!

Pigeon Hole Cafe
93 Goulburn St
West Hobart, Tasmania 7000
A cozy little cafe with exceptional food. Ingredients are locally sourced and ridiculously fresh.  The coffee is suburb.  It may look small from the front, but there's seating in the back!
The Drunken Admiral
17-19 Hunter Street Old Wharf
Hobart Town, Tasmania
This restaurant is just as amusing as it's name.  The decor on the inside is everything you'd imagine from a nautical, swashbuckling, and ocean-side restaurant.  They have a great kids menu and a large selection of fresh seafood.  Perfect for large groups or small, your children are sure to be delighted.  Watch out, the kid's dessert is lethal (in a good way) and you'll definitely want to get in on that action.
Daci & Daci Bakers
11 Murray St
Hobart, Tasmania 7000
Gorgeous pastries and savories in a convenient spot.  Your mouth will water as soon as you get a look at their tantalizing display case.  I wanted one of everything, but had to hold myself back and instead try a bite of everything my family ordered.  This is a great place to pick up treats for later, or sit in the quiet cafe indoors or outdoors with a nice coffee and cup of tea.
Get Shucked
1735 Bruny Island Main Road
Great Bay, North Bruny Tasmania 7150
On the beautiful Bruny Island you can enjoy fresh, fresh, fresh oysters at this casual restaurant.  Complete with a small playground for kids, clear glass windows to watch the "shucking" inside, and a view of the ocean worthy of a travel magazine, you'll want to stay for a while.  Access down to the beach is just across the road as well with some great tide pools and sandy beach.

Hotel Bruny
3959 Main Rd
Alonnah, Tasmania 7150
Also on Bruny Island, you could almost pass this unassuming restaurant while gazing at the water and beach.  Don't do it!  You must stop. The food is as local as you can get, with most ingredients coming directly from the waters off the island.  Sample as many of the seafood dishes as you can. The fish platter for 2 is a good place to start. You'll never have a fresher kid's fish and chips!
Felons Bistro
Port Arthur Historical Site
Arthur Highway, Port Arthur, Tasmania 7182
Only open for dinner, make sure you make reservations in advance.  On site at the Port Arthur Historical Site you can dine in style and then do one of the ghost tours.  Food is locally sourced (am I repeating myself?!) and seasonal.

Salamanca Market
On a Saturday, head towards Salamanca in the heart of Hobart.
This extensive outdoor market has anything and everything: delicious food stalls, toys, gifts, and art.  The day we went it was raining, but the kids didn't care because it was so cool!  You could spend an hour or a day walking through the streets of Hobart while sorting through all the stalls.
Port Arthur
Arthur Highway
Port Arthur, Tasmania 7182
This UNESCO World Heritage site lies only a 90 minute drive from Hobart.  The road trip itself is beautiful and the actual site of this once-timber camp and prison is breathtaking.  While our 2 and 4 year old couldn't make it through the hour long walking tour, they did love exploring the sprawling grounds and haunting buildings.  Older children might enjoy an after-dark ghost tour.  Totally worth the day trip!  Make sure you take the boat tour.

Bruny Island
A short 30-minute car ride from Hobart and another 20 minute ferry ride (that you drive the car onto!), will put you on foodie heaven, aka, Bruny Island.  This island has everything: great restaurants, gorgeous beaches, camp grounds, nature tours, cheese sampling, the list goes on and on. I cannot stress enough what a lovely day trip this is.  You can experience mountains, beach, and wild life. Spend a day here ... wait, spend many days here!
Mt Wellington
Summit the mountain.  And if you are traveling with small children, summit it with a car!  If you want a clear view of all of Hobart, then make sure you pick a day with nice weather and make your way up the mountain.

stay:

Airbnb
In classic Cally style, my go-to choice is to stay at a house, with a kitchen, and multiple bedrooms for guests and children.  On this occasion we stayed at a perfect Airbnb house in the West Hobart area.  Other great areas to stay in are Salamanca, Battery Point, and Sandy Bay.  There are also many hotels to choose from and several farm-stays just outside of Hobart.

general tips:

When traveling with children, renting a car here is a great idea.  This is a rather hilly city and we were glad to have the use of a van to cart the 2 kids and my parents around in.  Plus, there are many things to see a quick road-trip away from Hobart.
The weather can be ever-changing.  It's warm one day and cold the next, so pack in layers.
Try out as many places as you can food-wise.  This is a delightful place to eat, and then walk, and then eat again.
